It’s a common misunderstanding that you need a Social Security number (SSN) to apply for a federal employer identification number (EIN) for a company. Even if a business owner is not a U.S. citizen, they may still apply for a federal tax ID number (EIN) for their company. The Internal Revenue Service treats Social Security numbers and Employer Identification Numbers (EINs) for businesses differently.

In order to file for a foreign EIN, an SSN is not required, although it does make things easier. Because a valid Taxpayer ID Number is needed to apply for an EIN online, this is the case. Those who do not qualify for a Social Security Number in the United States may apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) instead.

Apply for an ITIN using IRS Form W-7 if you do not qualify for a Social Security number. Getting an ITIN may simplify the process of applying for a company EIN since it will enable you to utilize the IRS’s electronic form.

What exactly is an EIN? Ask top CFO India. In order to properly identify a company or nonprofit organization for tax reasons, the IRS issues a number known as an Employer Identification Number (EIN).

    • Limited Liability Companies and Partnerships (LLCs)
    • Companies, Inc., and S Corporations
    • Trusts and other charitable organizations
    • Some public agencies and nonprofits are excluded from paying taxes.
    • Individuals like trustees of certain kinds of trusts and executors of wills are exempt from this rule.

Procedures for Applying for an Employer Identification Number Among the many options for getting an EIN are:

    • Submitting a request using the IRS’s online application system
    • Submitting an SS-4 application by the mail or fax
    • Telephoning the IRS at 1-800-829-4933 to submit an application
    • Filing a paper application at a neighborhood IRS branch (by appointment only)

    • Details about the company’s name and location
    • Information such as names and SSNs (Social Security Numbers) or FEINs (Employer
    • Owners’ or partners’ tax identification numbers (EINs)
